Getting around the islands couldn't be easier. While inter-island flights are the quickest way of getting between the islands, those with time on their hands can take more leisurely routes.
Bahamas Fast Ferries has a high-speed 115ft (35m) catamaran which runs a daily service from Nassau to Harbour Island, calling at nearby Spanish Wells and North Eleuthera. The trip takes two hours. They also offer services from Nassau to north, central and south Andros, Sandy point on Abaco and George Town, Exuma.
The most adventurous, and one of the most rewarding ways of travelling around the islands is on the battered old mailboats that ply the routes between Nassau and the Out Islands. These diesel-powered vessels carry mail, goats, pigs, hardware and anything else the islanders need. The trips vary from 5 hours to 21 hours, the longer trips are definitely not for the faint-hearted.
For getting around on the islands, visitors should jump on a jutney (local bus). These operate on Nassau/Paradise Island and Grand Bahama Island. Taxis are readily available and are always there to meet incoming flights and car hiring is easy throughout the islands.
Bikes and motor scooters are available to hire at most hotels giving you the freedom to spin around town and the countryside, exploring the island at your own pace.
You'll find guided tours on most of the islands and you'll be able to select one that suites your interests ranging from shopping sprees to ecological adventures among the birds and island wildlife.
